INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ABOUT EBB. IT WILL ONLY TAKE YOU A FEW MINUTES, AND IT WILL TELL YOU ALL THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT USING THE ELECTRONIC BLUEBOOK PROGRAM.

  1. The Electronic Bluebook ("EBB") testing software can be downloaded onto your computer free of charge at www.electronicbluebook.com. Students who do not have access to the Internet or who have slow connections to the Internet can install the program for free using a CD version of the program that will be available from your school.

  2. After installing EBB on your computer, open the program to acquaint yourself with it and to make sure that it is working properly. Please note that EBB saves your exam answers in an encrypted format, so you will not be able to open and review any sample exams that you may type.

  3. After you open EBB, you will be asked to enter your exam identifier, course information, and the location of your removable disk drive, and you will be asked to insert a 3.5" disk, Zip disk, or SuperDisk into your removable disk drive. You will not be allowed to proceed to the typing screen in EBB until you have entered all of this information and inserted a disk into the designated drive. (If you want to type a sample exam, just make up an exam ID and course information and you will be allowed into the program for a sample test.) On exam day, your school will probably provide you with a new disk for use in each exam.

  4. EBB automatically saves a backup copy of your exam answer to a file on your computer¹s hard disk every 30 seconds. This backup file can be recovered from your computer later if necessary (e.g., if the disk with your exam on it becomes lost).

  5. EBB automatically places your exam identifier and course information on each page of your exam. So there is no need for you to type this information on each page of your answer.

  6. EBB provides a timer, page counter, line counter, and word counter so that you can keep track of your time and place in the exam.

  7. EBB allows you to underline, bold, and italicize text using the buttons at the top of the typing screen. In addition, the standard keys on your keyboard for punctuation (e,g, the Shift key) will work as normal. However, EBB will not allow you to use function keys or macros, and EBB will not allow you to access the Internet or other files.

  8. EBB allows you to block delete text. EBB does not allow you to cut and paste text or copy and insert text.
  9. EBB provides Undo and Redo functions. Use these functions to restore any part of your work that you accidentally delete. The Undo and Redo functions will work to restore up 10 prior actions or keystrokes.

  10. EBB does not provide a spell check function. (If you are wondering why this feature and the cut and paste and copy features are not provided, it is because your school probably does not want you to use these features because they are not available to non-typists.)

  11. The exam questions are not contained in EBB. You will be given a paper copy of the exam to work from just like the non-typing students.

  12. When you are done with your exam, click the Finish button at the bottom of the typing screen. (Don't worry if you accidentally click the Finish button during your exam because you will be given a chance to return to your exam on the next screen.) Make sure you turn in your exam disk to the proctor, and make sure that you have written your exam identifier and any other required information on the disk.

  13. Each time you open EBB, a new exam file is created. EBB does not allow you to go back and edit prior exam files because the files are encrypted for security purposes.

  14. If you experience a computer problem that prevents you from continuing to type in EBB, immediately notify the proctor of the problem and follow the proctor¹s directions. You will probably want to finish your exam in a paper examination booklet, but you may be allowed to restart EBB and complete the rest of the exam in a new file.

  15. Although it is not likely that leaving other applications open while working in EBB would cause any problem, we recommend that you close other applications before working in EBB just to be safe. We also recommend that you turn off any screensavers from third-party providers (i.e., a screensaver that did not come loaded on your machine) if you have had problems with the screensaver interrupting other applications.

  16. Currently, EBB works only with Windows® operating systems. We may provide a version of EBB for the Mac in the future.

  17. Finally, please consult your school's guidelines for the typing of exams. Your school may require that you sign up with the Registrar if you want to type your exam, and your school may have other special requirements that you must fulfill. Keep in mind that any attempt to circumvent the security systems of EBB will almost certainly be an honor code violation and an incident that must be reported to the bar licensure authorities.
